Navy Eyes CTL Plant at Indiana Base

EnergyWashington Week recently reported that the United States Navy is exploring the possibility of constructing a coal-to-liquid (CTL) production plant on at the Navy’s Crane Naval Support Activity base in Crane, Ind.  Citing information from Navy sources, the EnergyWashington Week reported on April 9 that the Navy’s plans are still in the early stages of development.

The Navy is reportedly eyeing the Indiana facility because of its proximity to coal and water resources.  The plant would likely be built by a private contractor leasing land from the Navy, an arrangement similar to one the Air Force has proposed for construction of a CTL plant at Montana’s Malmstrom Air Force Base.

Staff from the office of Sen. Richard Lugar (R-Ind.) are said to have been briefed by the Navy regarding the proposed CTL plant.  Lugar in 2007 voted in favor of an amendment offered by Sens. Jim Bunning (R-Ky.) and Pete Domenici (R-N.M.) that would have helped accelerate domestic CTL production.
