Some might not be familiar with the Yukon -here's the skinny on roads: The Klondike highway is open year round. It runs from Whitehorse to Dawson, is chip seal/pavement and accomodates heavy trucks. Halfway between Whitehorse and Dawson is the community of Pelly Crossing. It's about 600 people, a general store and not much more. A gravel road extends out 45 kilometers to the west to an old farm called "Pelly Farm." This is an over 100 year old farm, developed as a stop on the old winter stage coach line between Dawson and Whitehorse. In fact, the winter road they are proposing to build goes along the right of way of the old Dawson road. This trail is sometimes used by the Yukon Quest (which is happening right now!)

The gravel road to the farm is in reasonable shape, and is open year round, but would have to be upgraded considerably for commercial traffic.

I don't see this as a viable long-term solution to transportion, but it makes a great option to skid a lot of gear in before the river breaks up. Break up usually occurs in the beginning of May, but we are having a very mild winter.
