Many mining operations were developed to produce one bulk commodity, such as copper. The resource contained other critical minerals that had no market value then and were discarded as waste. Many of these critical minerals are now increasingly in demand as their unique properties find application in innovative, new clean technologies.

Major manufacturers are now seeking sustainable sources of critical minerals for their products, that can be tracked as conflict-free and produced in both environmentally and socially responsible ways. Closed mine sites can now represent economic opportunities to remediate environmental issues while recovering valuable metals and minerals from the wastes!
