rePlan Speaks Out on Planning for Resource Regions

Today at 1:30 pm, Senior Planner Michelle Drylie and Founding Partner John van Nostrand will make a presentation at the 2014 Canadian Aboriginal Mining Conference at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto. “Planning for Resource Regions: A Cross Canada Review” will focus on the challenges inherent in managing the growth and long-term sustainability of resource regions.

A number of the firms’ recent regional planning processes – one in northern Alberta (the Comprehensive Regional Infrastructure Sustainability Plan for the Athabasca Oil Sands) and the other in northern Manitoba (the Thompson and Region Infrastructure Plan) – address the challenges inherent in managing the growth and long-term sustainability of resource regions.

With these best practices as context, Michelle and John will also explore the possibilities for regional planning in the Ring of Fire region in Northern Ontario, where we are currently working with stakeholders to launch a similarly comprehensive planning process. Case studies and best practice approaches to participative regional planning with First Nations and Métis partners from these regions will be highlighted.

The Canadian Aboriginal Mineral Association is an Aboriginal, non-profit organization which seeks to increase the understanding of the minerals industry, Aboriginal mining and Aboriginal communities' paramount interests in lands and resources.
