Ring of Fire Talks Progressing: Rae

Bob Rae says the First Nation perspective on the Ring of Fire is that it can't be done without human development.

The former politician negotiates on behalf of nine Matawa communities in Ring of Fire talks with the province, and says they're currently exchanging proposals with the Ontario government.

He says an essential condition of their approach is that they want to see real improvements in the conditions on reserve and in the opportunities for aboriginal peoples.

Rae adds they also want to see a greater degree of recognition of the territorial claim First Nations have over development.

He says they're meeting with the government on a regular basis, and don't view the $1 billion pledged as being stalled, given they're still in the middle of negotiations.

Rae is optimistic we're going to see some real signs of progress over the next few months. (Photo: Caryn Ceolin)
