Aren't publicly traded companies run by ceo's who have been elected by shareholders who actually own the company through there shares?

So shouldn't the ceo and bod's be trying to do whats in the best interest of the company for the shareholders and if they don't want to release information shoupdnt they give a reason why to those same people that actualoy employ them?

Am I wrong?
