Beetaloo pipeline

The Falcon presentation mentions existing pipelines that run through the Beetaloo Basin. That is correct. One line runs North-South. This is the Amadeus-Darwin mainline.

"In the Northern Territory, ~550 km north of Marla, is the 1500 km Amadeus Basin–Darwin gas pipeline, completed in 1986 and operated by NT Gas Pty Ltd. This has a maximum daily capacity of 2.5 million m3 (87 mmcf)"

The Amadeus Basin to Darwin gas pipeline supplies Darwin's Channel Island and other power stations with natural gas produced near Alice Springs in Central Australia. This pipeline receives approximately 36 percent of its supply from the Palm Valley gas field and 64 percent from the Mereenie oil and gas field. Construction, begun in July 1985, was completed in November 1986 (commissioned in December 1986). With the exception of the maximum 10,150 kPa pressure maintained in the 116km section from Mereenie to Tylers Pass where the two gas streams are mixed, the pipeline is operated at a maximum 9,650 kPa pressure.

Protection against corrosion is effected by a factory-applied high density polyethylene coating in conjunction with an impressed current cathodic protection system. A state-of-the-art supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) remote control and monitoring system facilitates control of the pipeline. Operators in Darwin continuously monitor key aspects of the pipeline over its entire length and can effect instantaneous control including shutdown at seventeen locations along the line. Manually-operated valves provide further control at 12 additional sites, enabling the pipeline to be isolated into segments ranging from 10 to 70km. The design life of the pipeline is 50 years. During that time demand is expected to at least triple to around 1.9 million cubic metres per day. The licensee and operator is NT Gas Pty Ltd.

Within PetroHunters lease area, this main line branches off to the East, this is the McArthur River spur.

This pipeline is a spur line branching from the Amadeus Basin to Darwin gas pipeline at Daly Waters and stretching to the power station at McArthur River Mine. Pipeline construction began in July 1994 and was completed in January 1995. Gas was introduced in March 1995. The pipeline has an outside diameter of 168.3mm, is 330km in length and has a maximum allowable operating pressure of 10,200kPa. Protection is afforded by an impressed current cathodic protection system and high density polyethylene coating. The pipeline is licensed and operated by NT Gas Pty Ltd.
