Message: Fractures and technology

"Does anyone here see the possibility that they don't really want to over frac stimulate long areas too far from the well bore"

In many cases operators are choosing to isolate their wells into a number of "zones" to achieve exactly that. By doing a multi-zone frac, vs. a "Hail Mary frac" (whole well bore), they are able to target the length, size, and shape of the fractures in each zone.

The Bakken Shale in SE Saskatchewan and North Dakota is a good example of where this works. In the past when operators "over fraced" the well, the fractures would break into the above aquifer and water out the well. With multi-zone fracs, the operator can get high density, short fracs that stay within the payzone.

Here is a presentation from Petrobank that talks more about this, and shows how they are producing this field. (FYI - Not related to Hungary). Check out slides 15-19.
