A little bit of history from my own country.

We had a Prime Minister named Brian Mulroney, who lauded over a new tax called the GST.

The majority of the people did not want the tax, but he and his government decided it was for the better, and so it was legislated into law.

Regardless of whether it was a good tax or not, this tax today, is still hated by the majority.

Why?

Because the people were not given a choice.

Along comes another Prime Minister, called Jean Chretien.

He called a referendum on whether to allow Quebec to be recognized as a distinct society.

Most of TPTB, The Elites, The Hoyty Toyty of Canadian Society, spoke out in favour of Quebec being recognized as such, but when the smoke cleared, the common people of the land decided against the decision.

To this day, no other referendum has been held on anything.

Suggest governments do not work for the good of the people, and are afraid to let them vote except in elections.

So, we have a government that does not trust the people, and a people that does not trust government.

The only thing that keeps the government in control, is the monies they collect, by law, from taxes.

I'm sure this is the same situation in most democracies and until the people are recognised in essential decision-making directions, mistrust will be the order of the day.
