There is an aspect to the current work with VCSEL integration into this platform that is very intriguing. I see unique LIDAR applications.
The jury is still out on wavelength selection but at this time it appears like 905nm (VCSEL) and 1550nm (DFB laser) wavelengths will be competing. Each has their own strengths and weaknesses. 1550nm allows for greater distance but is impeded by atmospheric conditions. 905nm is more resistant to atmospheric conditions but limited in distance.
It would appear that POET has the capability to integrate both on the same chip.
