Marvell Technology (please see: https://lnkd.in/gX-qqbmb)
always has the option of moving downstream in just becoming a merchant supplier of DSP chipsets for ZR types of modules (please see: https://lnkd.in/e_dbcgCG). At the end of the day, the emphasis of the supplier is in being a semiconductor firm rather than an optics company. Certainly, the coherent DSP business is mainly there to generate revenue with a lot of different customers, including in China. With so many competitors, the optical module business is not truly aligned with high margins. Nevertheless, for the foreseeable further, there will apparently continue to be a commitment to both, as illustrated by the early announcement on 800ZR by Marvell (please see: https://lnkd.in/e8H2duiM). Additionally, to the best of fibeReality’s knowledge, the module team has been very supportive of Lumentum’s ZR efforts (please see: https://lnkd.in/gET2K7AR).

We would also anticipate that in the longer term, when it comes to 1600ZR, Marvell will continue to offer both DSP chipsets and full modules for the following five reasons: 1) abandoning the COLORZ brand, after so much promotion, could be harmful to its valuation (Microsoft as a big customer/end user might also become unhappy given the originally “massive hit with its own network expenditures” (please see: https://lnkd.in/gFhnHAzk); 2) it would hardly be shocking if Cisco/Acacia, its major competitor in this space, decides not to make a commitment to internally funding the next data rate (please see:
https://lnkd.in/egVFYDMp); 3) regarding the note on a new, stealth DSP startup in the last link of this post, at this time, fibeReality is inclined to doubt anything resembling a massive raid on coherent technology talent at Marvell; 4) regarding another newcomer, Alphawave, despite its potential to be quite innovative, it appears destined to be a niche play, perhaps as an enabler of a lite version, as desired by Amazon; and 5) there would be reluctance to even appear to undercut an extremely important executive, Loi Nguyen, EVP and GM of the Cloud Optics Business Group, and co-founder of Inphi.
