Personally, I would not put much trust in the relevance of that mouse model without evidence that it mirrors diabetic human chronic kidney failure. 
Remember how good apabetalone was at raising HDL in mice?
There are many examples where mouse experiments were quite misleading, wasting a lot of time and money.
Very convenient to do, but also very often not worth the paper the manuscripts were written on - no matter how elegant and sophisticated the lab work.
