Is gold the new plastics?

Who knew, in 1967, that we were only in the beginning of the enormous growth in the worldwide need and production of Plastics. What Mr. McGuire privately shared with Ben in the 1967 movie, The Graduate, might have been the single most important piece of financial information anyone at that time could have been given. But, it seemed like a joke, and Ben didn't much take it too seriously. See here,

Nevertheless, McGuire was right. Now, if that movie was released today and Ben was told that the future was in "GOLD", I suspect many movie goers would react in a similar way, not taking the advice too seriously.

For those who use the baseball analogy that we're in the fourth or fifth inning of the current gold bull market, I wonder if they may be grossly underestimating its actual longevity? Perhaps, like plastics, in 1967, we are more like at the time in the game when we're singing the national anthem and haven't yet even threwn the first pitch?
